Infant jesus church Jubily memorial shrine inaugurated

It was on 9th of this may, Rev Dr.Stanley roman - Bishop of quilon- Inaugurated the st Mary's shrine in memorial of the 400 years jubilee of St.peters church. The first church was built in 1610 has been rebuilt several times, recently in 2006 and this year we are celebrating 400 year jubilee. The foundation stone for this shrine was laid last December and it was expected to complete before the infant Jesus feast on last January. But due to the lack of time to complete the construction it was postponed and decided to conduct the inauguration after the Easter. Even though it is small, It is a very nice construction, a very divine holy statue of mother mary has been placed in the shrine. Nowadays Lot of peoples are coming to watch and pray here. Come, pray and be blessed. I have included some pictures of the holy shrine.

Good friday procession at moothakara st.peters church

Like any other feasts and celebrations, our Holy Week and Good Friday also has more specialty than any other church around Quilon. The most important thing should specify is the holy statue at the Good Friday procession. This religious statue is completely made up of wood, and has all the moving joints like human body. The hands, legs, knees and even neck can be rotated like our own body parts. Can turn the head left or right or tilt the face front or to the sides, that much brilliant sculpture. Sculptures used some kind of hard clothes and other materials to make the holy statue looks similar to a human body. This is a must see architecture, and all wonder how they built this statue several hundred years back. I got an opportunity to see this wonder only two years back, and I was really scared to hold the statue in my hands. I have included some snaps for you.

Kollam Moothakara church of Infant Jesus

The history of Moothakara is interwoven with that of the Christians of Quilon. In 1610 the first Church of Moothakara was built which is believed to have been swept away by the sea. In 1778 De Clements Joseph S.J. the Bishop of Cochin who was not allowed to enter Cochin settled down in Moothakara. A chapel and residence was built in 1780 by Fr. Salvador Dennis. Bishop Joseph stayed here and in 1791 he died and was buried in the Church. In the 19 th century Christians from Tamil Nadu (Bharatha Christians from Tuticorin) migrated to Moothakara for fish vending. It is believed that the Tamil connections of Moothakara dates back to the 17 th century. Jesuit missionaries report of a parava Christian community in Quilon in the 17 th century. The feast of St. Peter in Moothakara is unique because on that day as the sea is symbolically opened with the keys of Peter by the Parish Priest. Devotion to Infant Jesus started in 1987 and now Moothakara is a pilgrim centre
